LuxSoft of Luxulyan
We convert Canon Starwriter WP files so that they can be opened & edited in modern Windows word processing programs .... without losing the text formatting.
Established in 1986, LuxSoft has been performing fully confidential and professional disc conversion services for years so please beware of amateur imitators & those who reject faulty discs - we care about your valuable data.
Site Map Other types of file conversion we can do
Many companies convert Canon Starwriter WP files to 'plain text' (ASCII) format to suit text editors like Notepad & Wordpad. This means you loose all your precious formatting and text enhancements.
We don't.
We convert to suit proper wp programs like Word and Works and we keep your formatting including bolds, italics and most common foreign language accents.
The service is fully confidential. Post-transfer support comes in the form of a comprehensive instruction & tips sheet plus free support by phone or e-mail.
Oh yes, and we are one of the cheapest services around too!
Please note that we do not provide technical support, consumables or any other services for Canon Starwriters. |
Canon Starwriter Models we can handle
We can convert any size of Canon Starwriter format word processing file from (at least) the following models ....
.... to suit all versions of Microsoft Word for Windows, MSWorks, Appleworks, Lotus Word Pro, Word Perfect etc etc.
If your model is not listed above, please contact us for advice. However, if it is a Starwriter Pro 5000 or 7000, please note that we are no longer accepting discs from these two models as experience has shown that too many of the files they produce are in a non-standard format which will not convert.
We can accept Canon wp files from the models listed above on the following media:
3.5" floppy discs (160k, 720kb (MF2DD) & 1.44mb (MF2HD))
Files saved via a PC on CD, DVD or as attachments by e-mail
Ditto as Zipped archives on PC floppy or by e-mail.
Important Note - Unacceptable File Names:
Canon WP's allow file names to contain symbols such as slash (/), question mark (?), double quote ("), percent (%), asterisk (*) and comma. Neither DOS nor Windows can accept these so such files cannot be processed as they are. Moreover, Canons can differentiate between files of the same name entered in different cases (eg one in all lower case and one all upper or mixed) but in DOS/Windows they are treated as being the same so, when copying to a PC, the 2nd will try to overwrite the first.
If your Canon is still extant, please re-name any offending files before sending us your discs so that -
they are uniquely named, irrespective of upper/lower case
ampersand (&), hyphen (-), underline (_) and single quote (') are the only permitted symbols.
If your Canon is not still around or this is not done:
We will have to alter your original discs accordingly in order to be able to read them
As this takes time and dedicated equipment, there is a surcharge of £3.50 per affected disc for this service.
Format of the transferred files
The most popular format is Rich Text Format as this can be read by all versions of MicroSoft Word, MS Works, Lotus Word Pro on PC or Apple Mac.
However, we can also convert files to be suitable for Word Perfect, Windows Write and Wordpad.
The price is a mere £5 for ALL the files on a floppy disc irrespective of how many files it contains .... and also there are progressive quantity discounts for 6 or more error-free discs too.
Please note that, unlike some other companies, it's a flat fee per complete floppy disc - there are NO surcharges for full or nearly full discs, NO surcharges for our supplying the PC floppies/CD's and NO surcharges for sending back your old discs afterwards!
For files sent to us on CD or e-mailed as Zipped archives, prices are based on £5 per megabyte of uncompressed data but here too there are discounts for quantity so please ask.
All prices include e-mailing of results worldwide. For results on CD or floppy disc sent by post, a minimum invoice total of £10 has had to be introduced due to the ever increasing cost of postage. For CD's to Europe (incl Republic of Ireland), there is an additional postal charge of 50p and to non-Europe of £1.50.
For overseas customers, £1 translates to approx $2 US or 1.30 Euros
The conversion service is totally confidential and we aim to send back the results within 48 hours ... but at busy times it may take a little longer.
The procedure for sending us your data ....
- By e-mail attachment ...
If you have already copied the Canon data to your PC or Mac, the quickest and cheapest way of sending us the files is by e-mail but please contact us first at malc@luxsoft.demon.co.uk giving an approx total size of files. You will then be given an alternative e-mail address to which they should be sent.
If the files are not already on your computer, you have a floppy drive fitted to it and you don't want to risk posting the discs but you are unsure how to go about copying them, please e-mail us at the above address to ask for our 'How to E-Mail Canon files' help sheet.
- On Floppy Discs or CD's ...
If possible, please make a copy of each of the discs you wish to be converted and send us the copies, not the originals.
See the 'important note' above regarding invalid filenames
Please clearly number the discs
Click here to print out the Conversion Request Form to give us your details as well as how you would like the discs converted.
Pack up the discs securely ... either in an anti-static bag or wrapped in paper kitchen towel within a small cardboard container .... then pop the pack in a "Jiffy" type padded envelope together with your completed Conversion Request Form (or substitute letter).
Please do NOT send
any money at this stage. You will be invoiced on completion and
this will detail the payment options, which now include funds
transfer by ![]()
Post the package to us. Please note that .....
Use of Recorded Delivery or Registered Mail is encouraged for valuable material & when disc copies cannot be made but this may delay receipt as the post arrives outside office hours.
Postage rates in the UK go on thickness of pack as well as size and weight so even just a single floppy must go as a 'Large Letter'. To avoid Royal Mail's punitive surcharges, please ensure that all mail is adequately stamped.
By sending us data either on disc or by e-mail, you are deemed to have accepted the Terms & Conditions of our service.
What we then do ....
Any
invalid filenames are corrected for Windows by replacing any
unacceptable characters by hyphens or underlines while duplicated
names are cured by suffixing the second occurrence. If we encounter any
serious reading problems with the discs because they have become corrupted, we will contact you by telephone or e-mail to discuss options and the likely additional charges for repairing the discs.
In
accord with your preferences and the volume of data involved, the
results are either e-mailed to you or sent by post on floppy disc or
CD accompanied by an invoice and a comprehensive set of instructions about how to access
the files in your PC's word processor plus advice on editing & re-formatting the documents. For
the security of your data, your original discs (if still
required) are returned to you under separate cover. This is done once your payment has been
received and, if by cheque, this has been cleared by our bank. Unlike
other companies, we do NOT ask for payment in advance but we do ask for
prompt settlement of the invoice.
"I am delighted with the conversion of
the discs - so
clear and easy to edit."
"Thank you for a perfect service"
