Introduction

Many companies convert Canon Starwriter WP files to 'plain text' (ASCII) format. This means you loose all your precious formatting and text enhancements like bold & italics.

We don't.

We convert them to the special file formats used by proper WP programs like Word and Works so as to keep your formatting, text enhancements and common foreign language accents. As a matter of course we also convert the Canon's back-up of the last file edited or deleted.

We can now also convert Address Lists ('Lst' files) for use with all popular spreadsheet and database programs.

All the resulting files can be opened, edited & printed just as if you had keyed the text into your PC or Mac in the first place

Our service is fully confidential. Post-transfer support comes in the form of a comprehensive instruction & tips sheet plus free support by e-mail.

Our experience is that, as with all good things in life, quality is far more important than speed. Hence, we don't make rash boasts about same day turn-round because our prime concern is for your valuable data, particularly the accuracy and completeness of the results we achieve for you, especially when discs are faulty.

We convert Starwriter & Starjet files
to suit
Microsoft Word, Works
and many other PC & Mac formats
from the following models ...

We can convert any size of standard word processing file from (at least) the following Canon Starwriter / Starjet models ....

  • AP81 to AP89 series eg AP800 & AP830

  • Starwriter 20

  • Starwriter 30

  • Starwriter 60

  • Starwriter 70

  • Starwriter 80

  • Starwriter 85

  • Starwriter 95

  • Starwriter 4000

  • Starwriter Jet 300 - Starjet 300

  • Starwriter Jet 350c - Starjet 350c

  • Starwriter Jet 400 - Starjet 400

  • Starwriter Jet 500 - Starjet 500

  • Starwriter Jet 550c - Starjet 550c

If your model is not listed above, please contact us for advice.

Important note for Starwriter Pro 5000 & Starwriter Pro 7000 models -

Please note that we are reluctant to accept discs from Starwriter 5000 or Starwriter 7000 models because they are entirely different to all the others in terms of operating system, file format, supplied programs and document layout capabilities. Thankfully we do have software that will convert very simple wp docs from these terrible twins but we cannot guarantee that all docs will readily convert satisfactorily. If your Canon is still working, it's therefore a wise initial move to try converting the files yourself using the software that was supplied with the machine. Otherwise, please contact us to discuss the disc contents.

Disc & File Formats Accepted

We can accept Canon text document (Txt) or Address List (Lst) files from the supported models listed above on the following media:

  • 3.5" floppy discs (160k, 720kb (MF2DD) & 1.44mb (MF2HD))

  • Files saved via a PC on CD / DVD or Pen Drive

  • Ditto by e-mail, preferably as a Zipped archive

Please note that we are unable to convert spreadsheets or graphics files.

Invalid File Names

Canon WP's allow file names to contain symbols such as slash (/), question mark (?), double quote ("), percent (%), asterisk (*) and comma but both DOS & Windows firmly reject all these with "Access Denied". Worse, all attempts to re-name the files fail with the same message.

Also Canons can differentiate between files of the same name entered in different cases (eg one in all lower case and one all upper or mixed) but in both DOS & Windows they are treated as being the same so, when copying to a PC, the 2nd will try to overwrite the first.

If your Canon is still working well, please re-name any offending files before sending us your discs so that they are uniquely named, irrespective of upper/lower case and all occurrences in Filenames of slash (/), question mark (?), double quote ("), percent (%), asterisk (*) or comma are changed to acceptable symbols like ampersand (&), hyphen (-), underline (_), hash mark (#) and single quote (').

If your Canon is no longer working or this isn't done, this is not a problem because we have a way around the problem but it does take time and involves making changes to the original discs. We are quite willing to amend the odd one or two on a disc free of charge but where there's a goodly number, we reserve the right either to charge 4 per disc or disallow the quantity discount on that disc.

Format of the converted files

The most popular current formats are Word 'Doc', 'Docx' & Rich Text Format 'Rtf' because these can be read by just about all versions of MicroSoft Word, MS Works & Lotus Word Pro either on PC or Apple Mac. Normally therefore you will receive the results in ALL THREE of these formats. However, upon request, we can also convert files to be suitable for Word Perfect, Windows Write or Wordpad.

List (.LST) databases are normally converted to a table in MS Word 97/2000 format but other formats are available on request, including Excel.

These days the results are normally supplied as e-mail attachments (as simple attachments when a single disc is sent to us otherwise as a Zip) but there are options for CD and Pen Drive.

Costs and Turnround

1 - Normal word processor (.Txt) Files

For files on floppy disc(s), the base price is 10 for ALL the files on each complete disc, no matter how many docs there are on board, subject to a minimum conversion order value of 15 (ie excluding any P&P, media or data recovery charges)

The following volume prices assume that all the discs are error-free (fully readable):
  -  2 -  3 is 10.00 each
  -  4  -  5 is 9.00 each
  -  6  - 10 is 8.00 each
  - 11 - 15 it's 7.00 each
  - 16 - 20 it's 6.00 each and
  - 21 - 30 it's 5.00 each.

For files sent to us on CD or by e-mail (as simple attachments or Zipped archives), the price is based on 10.00 per megabyte of uncompressed data but here too there are comparable progressive quantity discounts as above, and again there's a minimum conversion order of 15 (ie excluding any P&P, media or data recovery charges)

2 - Address List (.Lst) Files

These files vary very considerably in size and complexity so each requires time-consuming dedicated editing. Where .Lst files are on the same disk as wp text files, the charge is just 1 per file; where they are on a separate disk, the charge is 7.50 for the first file thence 1 for any others.

- Please note ....

  • All prices quoted include e-mailing the results worldwide.

  • For results on CD, there is no extra charge if the total conversion cost exceeds 35, otherwise the extra is 2.50 to addresses in UK & Europe (incl Republic of Ireland) or 3.00 to outside Europe.

  • For results on a USB pen drive, these are free when conversion costs are over 70 otherwise it's an extra 4.50

For overseas customers, 1 currently translates to approx $1.30 US or 1.20 Euros. Please note that we can ONLY accept payments in Euros or Dollars as cash or via PayPal - bank transfers must be in Sterling ('GBP').

The conversion service is totally confidential and we aim to send back the results within 3-5 working days. Our main aim though is quality rather than speed so for large batches of discs or at busy periods, it may be a little longer. Also our 'heritage' hardware and its operator are not getting any younger !

How to send us your data ....

- By e-mail attachment ...

  • If you have already copied the Canon data to your PC or Mac, the quickest and cheapest way of sending us the files is by e-mail (either as simple attachments or, preferably, a 'Zipped' (compressed) archive) to malc@luxsoft.co.uk

  • If the files are not already on your computer but you don't want to risk posting the discs and you have a floppy drive fitted to it but you are unsure how to go about copying them, please e-mail us at the above address to ask for our 'How to E-Mail Canon files' help sheet.

  • When you e-mail the files, please also attach a completed Conversion Request Form or supply the requested information about you and your current computer.

- On Floppy Discs or CD's ...

  • If possible, please make a copy of each of the discs you wish to be converted and send us the copies, not the originals.

  • Please clearly number the discs

  • Click here to print out the Conversion Request Form. When completed it will give us your contact details as well as how you would like the disks converted. If you are unable to print out the form, please give the requested info in a letter instead.

  • The Conversion Request Form also gives advice on how to pack the discs and the postal address to which they should be sent (as a mailing label).

  • Please do NOT send any money at this stage - you will be invoiced on completion.

  • By sending us data either on disc or by e-mail, you are deemed to have accepted the Terms & Conditions of our service.

    What we then do ....

  • Any invalid filenames are corrected for Windows by replacing any unacceptable characters by hyphens or underlines. Duplicated names are cured by similarly suffixing the second occurrence.

  • If we encounter any reading problems with the discs because they have become corrupted, we will spend a total 40 mins trying to recover as much data as possible for you (as per our Terms & Conditions). If the time needed exceeds this, we will contact you by telephone or e-mail to discuss options and the likely additional charges.

  • The results (usually in both Word Doc and Rich Text Rtf formats) are either e-mailed to you or sent by post on CD or Pen Drive accompanied by an invoice and a comprehensive set of instructions. These cover accessing the files in your PC or Mac's word processor as well as advice on editing & re-formatting the documents.

  • If after receiving the results you still want your original discs returned to you, this is done as soon as possible after your payment has been received.

  • Unlike other companies, we do NOT ask for payment in advance but we do ask for prompt settlement of the invoice.

We look forward to receiving your files and to you joining the
hundreds of our delighted customers who have re-discovered
lots of old material they had completely forgotten!
