MOP, Supercalc 2 & Protext conversions:

The wrong way to do disc conversions !

PC's tend not to like PCW 3" discs in their drives!

Introduction

Most PCW owners just used the supplied LocoScript word processing software for all their needs but some preferred Protext whilst many who explored the world of the CP/M operating system used Supercalc2 or Mini-Office Pro for creating their Spreadsheets.

Most computer shops will tell you that it's just not possible to convert these to useable PC files ... but it is! Moreover our system keeps all you Protext document formatting (bolds, italics etc).

The downside is that the conversion of wp files from Protext and spreadsheets from both Supercalc 2 & MOP are all very laborious, time consuming tasks because each file has to be converted individually through a three or four stage process. Hence our charges abnormally are per file for these types rather than per disc. However, for Protext users, we now offer a cheaper option of a "Quick & Dirty" conversion to suit Word at our normal 'per disc' prices and we also offer this for wp files from Mini Office too.

Our conversion service is fully confidential and the results are suitable for the vast majority of DOS and Windows-based software. Full post-transfer support comes in the form of a comprehensive step by step instruction & tips sheet plus free support by e-mail.

We can also convert both Protext docs and Supercalc sheets from Amstrad CPC machines as well as Protext PC and Supercalc versions 2-4 from old Amstrad PCs & other IBM compatibles

Disc Formats accepted

We can accept :

  • single and double density CF2 3" discs from the PCW 8256, 8512 and 9512 plus CPC 464 & 6128

  • 3.5" discs (single, double and high density) from all flavours of PCW, be they 9256, 9512+ or 10, which had 3.5" disc drives from the outset, or older 8256/8512/9512 models which have been fitted with replacement drives.

  • files from PC Protext & early Supercalc versions on all PC media as well as by e-mail.

Formats available for the transferred files

Protext WP Files can be converted to:

  • PC Protext format

  • Rich Text Format (.RTF) - almost universally acceptable wp format

  • MS Word 7 (.Doc)

Please note that we also offer the much cheaper "Quick & Dirty" option. See below.

Supercalc 2/3/4 are converted to the 'Comma Separated Variable' (CSV) type of text file while Mini-Office Professional Spreadsheets are converted to plain text Word docs, both of which can be very quickly and simply read by most PC spreadsheet or 'Office' programs including:

  • Microsoft Works

  • Microsoft Excel

  • Lotus 123

The downside of this plain text format is that formulae/functions/algorithms & formatting properties are not exported with the data.

Costs and Turnround

In view of the very considerable amount of work involved converting each individual file, these data types are charged on a sliding scale according to the number of files there are per disc (but for Protext users, please also see the "Quick & Dirty" option below)

  • The basic charge per disc is 10.00 which covers the first two files on it.

  • Files 3-5 are 1.50 each

  • Files 6-10 are 1.00  each

  • Files 11-15 are 75p each

For over this number, please call or e-mail for a quote.

The 'Quick & Dirty' option for Protext and Mini Office wp files .....

If you have forgotten what's on the discs and/or don't want every file converted, we can offer you an alternative approach:

  • Convert the files to a format which you can read sufficiently well in modern WP programs like Word to see what each one contains. You can then decide whether to have it properly converted, manually edit the result yourself or leave it.

  • The base price is 15 for ALL the files on one complete disc no matter how many docs there are on board.

The following volume prices assume that all the discs are error-free (fully readable):
      -  2  -  3 is 11.00 each
      -  4  -  5 is 9.00 each
      -  6  - 10 is 8.00 each
      - 11 - 15 it's 7.00 each
      - 16 - 20 it's 6.00 each and
      - 21 - 30 it's 5.00 each.

To opt for this type of conversion, please tick the relevant box on the Conversion Request Form (see below).

Please Note (for all types of conversion) ....

Due to ever rising costs, we have had to introduce a minimum disc conversion charge of 15 (excluding any P&P or data recovery charges)

  • All prices quoted include e-mailing the results worldwide.

  • For results on CD, there is no extra charge if the total conversion cost exceeds 35, otherwise the extra is 2.50 to addresses in UK & Europe (incl Republic of Ireland) or 3.00 to outside Europe.

  • For results on a USB pen drive, these are free when conversion costs are over 70 otherwise it's an extra 4.50

For overseas customers, 1 currently translates to approx $1.30 US or 1.20 Euros. Please note that we can ONLY accept payments in Euros or Dollars as cash or via PayPal - bank transfers must be in Sterling ('GBP').

The conversion service is totally confidential and we aim to send back the results within 3-5 working days. Our main aim though is quality rather than speed so for large batches of discs or at busy periods, it may be a little longer. Also our 'heritage' hardware and its operator are not getting any younger ! Naturally, if there were to be a long delay, you would be notified by e-mail.

The procedure for sending us discs:

  • Please Click here to print out the Conversion Request Form to give us your details as well as how you would like the discs converted. If you are unable to print out the Request Form, please include a letter to give the info requested on the form.

  • If you have access to a working PCW, it's best to make a copy of each of the discs you wish to be converted and send us the copies; you keep the originals. (If you do not know how to copy discs using DISCKIT, please click here for detailed instructions).
If you don't have a working PCW or the discs won't copy properly due to disc errors, please send us the originals.

  • Please clearly number the discs

  • Wrap each disc in a piece of kitchen towel and place between pieces of card then pop the pack in a "Jiffy" padded bag. Some CF2 discs were supplied in Perspex cases - please do not send discs in these Perspex cases as they can shatter in the post and damage the discs!

  • Please do NOT send any money at this stage - you will be invoiced on completion.

  • Post the package to us. Please note that .....

    • Use of Recorded or Special Delivery is encouraged for valuable material or when disc copies cannot be made. To avoid missed deliveries causing delay & inconvenience, please OK this with us by phone or e-mail BEFORE using these signed-for services.

    • Our postcode is not in the database used by Royal Mail (this is Cornwall remember!) so manual entry by a Post Office clerk may be necessary.

    • Royal Mail's rates for mail within the UK are based on thickness of the pack as well as size and weight so even just a single floppy MUST be sent as a 'Large Letter'. If we decide to accept an inadequately stamped package by paying the Royal Mail's punitive surcharge for you, this will be passed on via our invoice.

  • By sending us your discs, you are deemed to have accepted the Terms & Conditions of our service.

What we then do:

  • If we encounter any reading problems with the discs because they have become corrupted, we will spend a total 30 mins trying to recover as much data as possible for you (as per our Terms & Conditions). If the time needed exceeds this, we will contact you by telephone or e-mail to discuss options and the likely additional charges.

  • In accord with your preferences and the volume of data involved, the results are either e-mailed to you or sent by post on CD together with an invoice and a set of step-by-step instructions & useful tips. The invoice will detail payment options which now include and direct inter-bank transfer while the notes not only give advice on opening and saving the files in your PC's word processor or spreadsheet / database but also comprehensive tips on re-formatting the documents to give even better looking results

  • If after receiving the results you still want your original discs returned to you, this is done as soon as possible after your payment has been received.

  • Unlike other companies, we do NOT ask for payment in advance but we do ask for prompt settlement of the invoice.
