As noted in the Introduction, many spellings of the name have existed over the years and most of this is attributable to the people themselves being unable to read or write so the names have been recorded by literate third parties either in accord with their own experience of the spellings or phonetic interpretations.

The first six entries below are from certificates which were obtained in the 1980's in the hope that they would establish a connection with more people having the relatively rare spelling of SURL but, with the possible exception of no 6, none such can be found to date. The remaining entries are derived from a trawl through the IGI and censuses.
